Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Across the country, many children are dealing with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. These are disabilities with which parents, as well as siblings must learn to live. Children and their families need help with illnesses including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and other spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, stroke, limb amputations just to name a few. As a result of the very unique needs of these little people, the American Board of Medical Specialties now recognizes physicians uniquely trained and experienced in dealing with these types of pediatric problems. These physicians are called Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Specialists. In spite of the great importance in caring for these children, this medical specialty remains relatively rare; there are only 80 board certified PRM doctors in the nation, but one of these doctors practices in New Bern, North Carolina. Dr. Christopher Delaney (also board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist) has special training that allows him to address the unique medical and functional needs of these children. He also directs other services including speech, occupational and physical therapies to maximize the child’s success. Dr. Delaney is able to use a variety of medications, sophisticated treatment for spasticity (a stiffening of the muscles associated with brain and spinal cord injury problems) wound care and design and prescription of braces and artificial limbs. He also prescribes adaptive equipment to allow the pediatric patient to improve mobility, self care and independence. Dr. Delaney looks at the family of the disabled as a key member of the treatment group and works with them closely to provide support and education. Coastal Physical Medicine is proud and honored and to be able to provide this unique service to our neighbors in this community and welcome inquiries in to our special abilities to help the disabled.
